India Gate Seeraga Samba Rice 5kg – South India’s Finest Aromatic Biryani Rice
India Gate Seeraga Samba Rice 5kg brings you one of the most prized and distinctive rice varieties in all of South Indian cuisine. Seeraga Samba – named after its striking resemblance to cumin seeds (seeragam means cumin in Tamil) – is a small, short-grain aromatic rice with a naturally intense fragrance and a uniquely soft, flavour-absorbing texture when cooked. It is the traditional and irreplaceable choice for authentic Tamil biryani, particularly the world-famous Ambur and Dindigul styles.
Sourced from the fertile Cauvery delta region of Tamil Nadu and packed under the trusted India Gate brand by KRBL Limited – India's largest rice processor – India Gate Seeraga Samba Rice 5kg delivers the same quality and aroma that has made this variety a staple in South Indian homes and restaurants for centuries. Now available at DesiBasket for delivery across Germany and Europe, this 5kg pack is ideal for families and anyone who takes their biryani seriously.
What Makes Seeraga Samba Special?
India Gate Seeraga Samba Rice is a Geographical Indication (GI) tagged variety, meaning its authentic cultivation is recognised and protected as originating from Tamil Nadu, India. Unlike long-grain basmati, Seeraga Samba is a short, slender grain that cooks to a soft, slightly sticky texture – perfect for absorbing the rich spices and masalas of a biryani without breaking apart. Its natural aroma is earthy, warm, and distinctly different from basmati, giving Tamil biryani its characteristic depth and identity that no other rice can replicate.

How to Cook
For Biryani (Ambur or Dindigul Style) – serves 4–6
- Wash India Gate Seeraga Samba Rice 2–3 times in cold water until the water runs clear.
- Soak in water for 20–30 minutes before cooking – this is important for even cooking and to preserve the grain’s structure.
- Prepare your biryani masala base: cook your choice of meat or vegetables with onions, tomatoes, yoghurt, and spices until the oil separates.
- Add the soaked and drained rice to the masala. Add water in a 1:1.5 ratio (1 cup rice : 1.5 cups water) – Seeraga Samba requires less water than basmati due to its shorter grain.
- Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to the lowest setting. Cover tightly and cook on dum for 18–22 minutes.
- Rest covered for 5 minutes off the heat, then gently fluff with a fork and serve.
For Plain Steamed Rice
- Wash and soak the rice for 20 minutes.
- Cook with a 1:1.75 ratio of rice to water in a pot or rice cooker.
- Serve with sambar, rasam, or any South Indian curry – the natural aroma of India Gate Seeraga Samba Rice 5kg elevates even the simplest meal.
Cooking Tips
- Always soak before cooking – this is non-negotiable for the best texture and aroma.
- Use slightly less water than you would for basmati or long-grain rice.
- For biryani, the dum cooking method (sealed, low heat) gives the best results.
- Store in an airtight container in a cool, dry place to preserve the natural fragrance of the rice.
Tip: The aroma of Seeraga Samba intensifies as it cooks – if your kitchen smells incredible, you’re doing it right.
