How to Use Udhaiyam Green Peas
Dried green peas require soaking before cooking to rehydrate and soften the outer skin. Here are the best methods for great results with Udhaiyam Green Peas:
Step 1 – Soak
Rinse the dried peas thoroughly under cold water. Soak in plenty of cold water for a minimum of 8 hours or overnight. The peas will swell and soften significantly. Drain and rinse again before cooking. Do not skip this step — unsoaked dried peas will take much longer to cook and may remain tough.
Pressure Cooker Method (Recommended)
- Add soaked peas to a pressure cooker with fresh water (cover by at least 5cm).
- Cook on high heat for 4–5 whistles, then reduce to medium for a further 5 minutes.
- Allow pressure to release naturally. The peas should be completely tender but still holding their shape.
- Drain and use in your chosen recipe, or season and serve as a simple spiced pea dish.
Stovetop Method
- Add soaked peas to a large pot with fresh water.
- Bring to a boil, skim any foam, then reduce to a steady simmer.
- Cook uncovered for 45–60 minutes until completely tender.
- Drain and use as required.
For Crispy Roasted Pea Snack
- Soak and cook the peas until just tender (not mushy). Drain thoroughly and pat dry.
- Toss with oil, salt, chaat masala, and chilli powder.
- Spread on a baking tray and roast at 200°C for 25–30 minutes, turning halfway, until golden and crispy.
- Allow to cool completely before eating — they will crisp up further as they cool.
