Anjappar Sabudana Tapioca Small – Fine Sago Pearls for Kheer, Payasam & More

Anjappar Sabudana Tapioca Small 300g is a premium quality small-grade sabudana (sago) — the fine, delicate pearl variety that is the preferred choice for creamy desserts, smooth porridges, and dishes where a softer, more uniform texture is desired. Made from the starch of the cassava (tapioca) root, these small, round sago pearls cook quickly, absorb flavours beautifully, and dissolve into a silky, smooth consistency that makes them ideal for kheer, payasam, and baby-friendly porridges. Anjappar Sabudana Tapioca Small is a versatile pantry staple used across Indian cuisine in both sweet and savoury preparations.

While the large pearl variety is the go-to for sabudana khichdi and vada, the small pearl grade excels in dishes where a finer, creamier texture is preferred. It cooks faster, requires less soaking time, and blends more seamlessly into liquid-based dishes. Anjappar Sabudana Tapioca Small 300g is also widely used during Hindu fasting days (vrat) — including Navratri, Ekadashi, and Mahashivratri — making it an essential ingredient in any Indian kitchen. Available now at DesiBasket for delivery across Germany and Europe.

Benefits

  • Premium quality – Clean, uniform small pearls with consistent size for even cooking and reliable results.
  • Essential fasting food – Widely accepted during Hindu vrat (fasting) days across all major fasting traditions.
  • Naturally gluten-free – Made from tapioca (cassava) starch, completely free from gluten — suitable for those with coeliac disease or gluten intolerance.
  • Vegan-friendly – Contains no animal products.
  • Versatile ingredient – Suitable for sweet dishes (kheer, payasam, porridge) and savoury preparations (upma, soup thickener).

Ingredients

Anjappar Sabudana Tapioca Small contains a single, natural ingredient:

  • Tapioca Starch (Sabudana / Sago Pearls – Small Grade) – Extracted from the cassava root (Manihot esculenta), processed into small, fine, round pearls. No additives, preservatives, or artificial ingredients.

Naturally gluten-free. Suitable for vegans and vegetarians. Please refer to the product packaging for the most up-to-date information. Store away from moisture to prevent clumping.

Country of Origin

This product is manufactured in India. India is one of the world’s largest producers of tapioca (cassava), with major cultivation in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Andhra Pradesh. Anjappar Sabudana Tapioca Small is processed in facilities that specialise in producing high-quality sago pearls for both domestic consumption and export, ensuring consistent size, purity, and cooking performance.

How to Use

Soaking (Essential First Step)

Rinse Anjappar Sabudana Tapioca Small 300g under cold water, then soak in just enough water to cover the pearls for 1–2 hours (small pearls require significantly less soaking time than large pearls). The pearls are ready when they are soft and can be pressed flat between your fingers without a hard centre. Do not over-soak — small pearls can become mushy if left too long.

Sabudana Kheer (Sweet Milk Dessert)

  1. Soak the small sabudana for 1 hour, then drain.
  2. Bring full-fat milk to a gentle simmer in a heavy-bottomed pan.
  3. Add the soaked sabudana and cook on low heat, stirring frequently, until the pearls are fully translucent and the kheer reaches your desired consistency.
  4. Add sugar to taste, cardamom powder, and a pinch of saffron.
  5. Garnish with chopped cashews, almonds, and pistachios. Serve warm or chilled.

Sabudana Payasam (South Indian Style)

Prepare as above but use coconut milk in place of dairy milk for a rich, fragrant South Indian payasam. Sweeten with jaggery instead of sugar and finish with a tempering of ghee, cashews, and raisins for an authentic Kerala-style dessert.

Sabudana Porridge (Baby & Toddler Food)

Small sago pearls are ideal for making a smooth, easily digestible porridge for babies and toddlers. Cook soaked pearls in water or milk until completely soft and translucent, then sweeten lightly with jaggery or fruit puree. Always consult your paediatrician before introducing new foods.

As a Soup Thickener

Add a small handful of soaked small sabudana pearls to soups, broths, or stews during the last 10 minutes of cooking. They will absorb the liquid and add a subtle body and thickness to the dish.

Storage Tips

Store in a cool, dry, airtight container away from moisture and direct sunlight. Small sago pearls absorb moisture easily, which can cause clumping. Best consumed within 6–12 months of purchase.
